有效的領導是分清輕重緩急；有效的管理是紀律和執行。

Management is efficiency in climbing the ladder of success; leadership determines whether the ladder is leaning against the right wall.”
管理是有效率地攀爬成功的階梯；領導則是判定攀爬的階梯是否靠在正確的牆上。

• Determine：判定，也有決定的意思，如Your decisions determine your destiny.（你的決策決定你的命運）
• lean：依靠，加介係詞against表示靠在某物上
• lean in，則為上半身向前傾的動作。

Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.
大多數的人聆聽不是為了理解，而是為了回應。

• 柯維觀察到許多人聽人說話，只是為了發表自己的意見，並不關心對方想說什麼。
• intent：企圖。attempt也有企圖的意思，但intent的積極性較強，是明確要完成某個目的，attempt則含有嘗試的意味，較intent不確定些。

Trust is the glue of life. It's the most essential ingredient in effective communication. It's the foundational principle that holds all relationships.
信任是生活的黏著劑，是有效溝通最必要的因素，是穩固所有關係的基礎原則。

• essential：在此當形容詞用，是必要的、本質的意思。當名詞用時，則解釋為必需品、基本要素，如The flat contained the basic essentials for life.（那間公寓配有生活的基本必需品）。

史蒂芬‧柯維（Stephen Covey，1932～2012），美國管理學大師，創立富蘭克林柯維管理諮詢公司，與《財星》（Fortune）500強中80%以上的公司及政府部門皆有合作關係；《時代》（Time）雜誌將柯維列為「全美25位最有影響力人物」之一。
