進退兩難|to be in a dilemma

在中文裡，我們時常會用「進退兩難」來表示事情棘手或者處境困窘，令人難以做出任何行動，在英文中，若要表達同樣的意思，可以用片語to be in a dilemma，或to be faced with a dilemma來表示。另外，像片語to be (caught) between a rock and a hard place，可以表示「處境艱困，而且需要做出重大決定」的意思，而片語to be in a fix/bind/quandary/pickle，則可表示「處在不好的狀況／身陷困難／左右為難／遭遇麻煩」的意思。

例句：
1.I’m in a difficult dilemma and don’t know what to do.
我正處於進退兩難的狀況，而且不知道該怎麼做。

2.The government is faced with the dilemma of raising taxes or cutting services.
對於該向人民加稅，還是刪減社會福利，政府正處於進退兩難的狀況。
