外國人說 What's the score？不是在問分數！

Jane 在會議室裡和同事們開會，正在討論一個新的專案會議。外籍同事 Alice 從外面走進來，看到會議開始了，Alice 開口說：Sorry I'm late. What's the score with the project presentation?
“什麼 score? 誰給我們的專案打分數嗎？”
Jane 非常納悶，這個 Alice 一進門就要給大家打分數，會不會太不禮貌了？！

原來 What's the score? 不是在問分數！

1.What’s the score?

（Ｘ）你考幾分？
（Ｏ）現在進行到哪裡了？/ 情況怎樣？

Score 這個字，我們最熟悉的用法是「分數、比分」。有名詞用法。
- What is the score now? 現在比分多少？（＊用於運動賽事上）

也有動詞用法，意思是「得分」：
- She scored 750 on the TOEIC. 她多益考 750 分。

但 Jane 和 Alice 的會議裡，"What's the score?" 是詢問專案進展，整體情況的更新。Score 原來指競技比賽中的「比分」，進一步延伸為「局勢」或「狀況」。

我們用 what’s the score，經常是安排被打斷、打亂，整體狀況需要梳理時，例如：
- What's the score, then - are they coming? 情況怎麽樣？—— 他們要來嗎？

Score 的類似用法還有要瞭解現在最新的狀況，可以用 get the score：

• I need to talk to Mark and get the score on what's happening with the project.　我需要和馬克談一談，瞭解一下專案的最新情況。

如果真要問別人考試的分數，該怎麼問？最常見的說法是："How did you do on the exam?"

一定要追問幾分，那就說：
- What score did you get on the exam?

再來看幾個 score 的道地用法。

2.I know the score.

（Ｘ）我知道分數。
（Ｏ）我心裡有數。／我知道問題的癥結。

Know the score: 意思是「瞭解實情」或「懂得內幕」。通常用來形容對某件事已經很瞭解或有經驗。“I know the score.” 指「我很清楚情况」或者「我知道事情的真相」。這句話表示說話者對某個情況、局勢或事情的內幕已經非常瞭解，不需要別人再解釋或告知。

• He knows the score when it comes to tough negotiations.

3.We finally settle the score.

（Ｘ）我們最後解決了比分。
（Ｏ）我們終於了結了這筆舊賬。

“Score” 在這裡的意思是「舊賬」或「恩怨」，指的是過去的爭執、不滿或未解決的問題。Settle the score” 意思是「清算恩怨、報復或了結舊賬」。

• He finally settled the score with his rival after years of competition.　 經過多年的競爭，他終於和他的對手了結了恩怨。

• The president used his speech to settle some old scores with his opponents. 總統利用他的演說跟對手算了一筆舊賬。
