要送海外客戶去搭飛機，結果發現飛機停飛，Rick 就說：I'm sorry. Your plane stops flying. 客戶嚇了一跳，面露驚訝。
1. Stop flying 是什麼？
Stop 後面加一個動詞，意思是「原來在做這件事，現在不做了。」如果你請某人「Stop whining.」意思是「別再抱怨」。
飛機「停飛」用 stop flying，會讓人會錯意，以為飛機本來在飛，現在不飛了，像是引擎突然「失去動力，無法飛行」。
- The plane stops flying and starts falling when the power is completely cut.
飛機突然停飛，接著在引擎完全失靈之際就開始下墜。
例一：Stop flying 也可當「禁止飛行」
Stop 加上一個動詞，除了有「停止做正在做的事」，還可以延伸到「禁止、戒掉」某件事，像 Stop smoking 是戒菸。所以禁飛、停飛，以後不能再飛，也叫作 Stop flying。與暫時性的飛機停飛不同。
- China orders domestic airlines to stop flying Boeing 737 MAX.
中國下令國內航班禁飛波音 737 MAX.
例二：停止搭飛機
Stop flying 還有一個意思，是指「停止搭飛機」。
- We generally recommend pregnant women stop flying after 34 weeks.
我們一般建議婦女懷孕 34 周後，不要搭飛機。
2. Be canceled & grounded 才是「停飛」
我們一般指的飛機「停飛」，可能是航班取消，可以用 cancel。
- If your flight is canceled, the airline typically rebooks you on the next available departure.
如果航班取消，航空公司一般會幫你安排下一班飛機。
如果是因故停飛，常用的還有 be grounded 這個字，因為飛機停在地面上（ground）。
- The Boeing 737 MAX has had two deadly crashes in three months. Now the President has weighed in and the plane was grounded.
波音 737 MAX 在 2 個月內就發生兩起致命墜機，現在總統已經介入，飛機已停飛。
3. grounded 美式懲罰
美國人在管教孩子最常見的方式叫作「禁足」，限制他們出去玩的自由，禁足，就是用 ground 這個字，至於另一種懲罰是「留校察看」detention，放學後多留 1-2 小時，留在學校做作業。
- You are grounded.
你被禁足了。 I'm grounded for the next two weeks since I stayed out until 4 am last night.
我被禁足兩周，因為我昨天晚上在外逗留到凌晨 4 點。4. stay grounded 務實、接地氣
grounded 本身當形容詞，做明智、理智的，Stay grounded 可以用來形容一個成名的人，還是會自己丟垃圾或者和老朋友碰面吃飯，依舊很務實、接地氣。
- He's trying to stay grounded in spite of all the fame and praise.
儘管得到眾多名聲與讚美，他還是很踏實過日子。
